Overview

The towering peaks of Karakoram have always been a source of great attraction to the western mountaineers especially Saltoro, SALTORO valleys is a beautiful mountaineers paradise of eastern Karakoram and fifth highest human habitation on the earth to walk up Siachen Glacier. The valley is situated on the southwestern side of major Karakoram glaciers and longest glaciers in the world outside the polar regions, Saltoro valleys has some of the finest clean granite towers and ice and rock mixed peaks to make the first ascent. Saltoro valley has three sub-valleys namely Gayari, Gyong and Chulung valleys; the local people of Saltoro bring their cattle in summers at these three meadows. Now people rely upon Chulung and Gyong meadows, Chulung meadows are very famous in Baltistan for its natural beauty, now these valleys are open for tourists and mountain adventure lovers around the world. The Chumik Kangri is one of the most beautiful Peak with a height of 6754 meter, and Gharkun Tower 6620m peak and other many rock towers around 6500 meters which are still unnamed and unclimbed peaks. In 1820 and 1825, William Moorcoft, a British veterinary surgeon, turned traveler explored from Ladakh Leh, he located the Saltoro pass and determined that Yarrkand River from the northeastern side of Karakorum. In 1838, G.T vigne visited Khaplu and traveled up to Saltoro Valley to reach Saltoro passes 5547 meters. In 1860, Captain H.H Godwin Austen surveyed Saltoro; he was followed in 1861, by E.G Ryall, a surveyor, who extended the survey to more areas in Saltoro valley, supplementing the survey work of Captain Godwin Austen. In 1909, Dr. T.G longstaff and his party reached Saltoro pass and Bilafond glacier. The last and highest civil settlement of Pakistan, they live in -25-degree temperature for four months. They are very hospitable. Just right below the jagged and glaciated ramparts of the Karakoram, it was known as Tibet-i-Khurd - Little Tibet.
